Kathabi is a multidisciplinary collaboration of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines and the Revival Dye Cooperative. It is a partnership among the staff, students and alumni of both educational institutions which culminates in a dance theatre performance adapted from the Itneg tribe’s folktales about the origins of weaving. This performance brings together dance, fashion, music, and the Itneg tribe and allows stakeholders to explore the creative and ethical possibilities of balancing traditional and contemporary perspectives while instilling humanistic values to all the participants.

  • 0.01 Closing the Gap during the Pandemic
Closing the Gap is the journey of an institution performance. In each step, the distance increases. Closing the Gap is a dream by two artists, painted by thirteen actors/dancers/youths/people. In trying to close the gap between the performer and the audience, various strategies were employed for this project, technically and artistically. Reality reflects art, art reflects reality. During this crisis (危机), an opportunity is found, and the moment is seized.

  • Javanese Gamelan: Old-New World
Gamelan has fascinated musicians and composers since the 19th Century, beginning with Debussy, and much has been shared, documented, or researched about it – the “old”, or more accurately, the known aspects of gamelan. With this presentation, “new”, refers not just to the potential promises to teach and learn gamelan, but also in the newness of students’ experiences, since most would have first encounters with the gamelan in their musical training here in NAFA.

  • Popularization and Development of Characteristic Guangxi Musical Instruments from the Perspective of Museums Development

Musical instruments epitomize culture and history, speaking volumes of the development of music. Instead of sealing the instruments in glass-topped cabins for static exhibition, we are devoted to the living preservation of musical instruments in Guangxi Museum of Ethnic Music, which features the integration of displaying, performance, musical instruments making and renovation, digitization, interaction, teaching and research.

This presentation falls into two parts, namely the general introduction of the characteristic Guangxi musical instruments on display in Guangxi Museum of Ethnic Music and the three exploratory ways to popularize and develop them:

    • Exploration of the relationships between exhibits, human beings and society.
    • Diversifies Music Cultures from the Perspective of Cross-culture Study
